The dry season (June-October) offers optimal conditions with experienced guides recommending these months to avoid monsoon rains and bitter winds. During my Christmas week climb in December (short rainy season), persistent downpours soaked through even waterproof hiking boots, making nights particularly chilly.

Remember – mountain weather is unpredictable! Higher altitudes tend to be drier. Pro tip: Pack daily outfits in waterproof bags and bring two pairs of boots: one premium waterproof pair for summit day, plus a backup for when shoes get drenched or sweat-soaked.

2. Travel Logistics & Recovery
For those combining their climb with Zanzibar (Africa’s “Maldives”), fly into Kilimanjaro Airport first, then return from Zanzibar – this creates a perfect adventure-recovery loop. The island’s turquoise waters make ideal post-climb therapy. Pure climbers should explore Moshi town – this charming, safe community offers excellent cycling routes and local cuisine worth extending your stay for.

3. Budgeting Your Expedition
Route options vary significantly:
– Machame Route: 6-7 days camping ($1400-$2200). Our $1700 package included a 15+ year experienced guide for 5-6 climbers
– Marangu Route: 5-6 days with hut accommodation ($100 cheaper)
– Lemosho Route: 8-10 day premium camping experience

4. Tipping Culture
While porter wages are included, tipping remains an established tradition. On final day, guides distribute tips to the team. Budget about $300 per climber – your guide will help determine appropriate individual amounts based on service quality.
