📌 It’s too hot in the afternoon for animals to come out and hunt. You’re more likely to see hunting activity early in the morning. It’s best to enter the park by 6 AM for the safari, and there’s still a chance to spot lions hunting around 7 AM.

📌 Staying near the Talek Gate offers great value. Don’t obsess over trendy hotels. Our hotel near the park entrance cost just over 1k, had a 9.5 rating on Booking, and offered Maasai-style butler service. Staying inside the park costs 2–3k, plus an extra half-day park fee. Both days we entered the gate, we saw action within half an hour—one day witnessing a hunt and another seeing wildebeest being eaten.

So don’t believe the hype about needing to drive an hour into the “core area”—what you see is all about luck.

📌 There are toilets in the park—you don’t have to hold it all day! But we only spotted two, and the park is huge, so don’t expect one nearby when you need it. If you’re desperate, you might have to resort to a bush toilet, though it’s technically not allowed, and you should stay alert.

📌 Bring your own hairdryer—hotels might not lend you one. I’m usually a minimalist backpacker, but even I found a hairdryer essential this time.

📌 Pack flip-flops. During the safari, you’ll often stand on the seats to take photos, and long rides can make your feet swell—flip-flops are the most comfortable option.

📌 The lunch boxes aren’t great, and sometimes they’re not filling enough. Buy some snacks along the way—you can munch on them while waiting for the wildebeest river crossing.

📌 Always go for a full-day safari and bring a lunch box. Never go back to the hotel for lunch—taking a midday break wastes three hours, and it’s not just about time. If you head out again in the afternoon, you’ll likely stay near the hotel, limiting your range.

📌 Bring a small speaker, but don’t play music when animals are around. The drives between locations can take up to five hours—listening to music or an audiobook helps pass the time.
