As we were capturing the elegant flamingos at Lake Ndutu, a thundering herd of wildebeests came charging down the hillside, determined to cross the lake. Our excitement was palpable; even though we couldn’t witness the great migration at the Mara River, this unexpected spectacle promised to be just as thrilling!

However, our guide simply smiled and said, “They won’t make it.” Indeed, despite the absence of crocodiles or other predators, the river proved too wide and too deep for the wildebeests. They made it halfway across before visibly hesitating, then reluctantly turned back. Drenched and dejected, they scrambled ashore and quickly grazed on some grass to regain their strength.

After a brief respite, they changed their approach and launched another valiant charge into the water. Unfortunately, the outcome was the same, and they once again retreated halfway. This cycle of eating, charging, and retreating continued four or five times throughout the afternoon, each attempt ending in failure.
