Yogyakarta is a place that can be visited over a weekend from 🇸🇬, perfect for a weekend getaway. It also boasts the world’s largest Buddhist temple, Borobudur, which was featured in the show “Flowers and Youth.”

🏨 I stayed at the Marriott Yogyakarta. The Marriott is probably one of the best hotels here. Although it is a resort, the happy hour at the lounge in the evening is surprisingly generous. Apart from the slightly damp rooms, the service and facilities are quite good.

🚗 For getting around Yogyakarta, it’s recommended to hire a car as the attractions are not centrally located. Aside from Malioboro Street, the Yogyakarta Palace, and the 🌳 Square, the other sites are not in the city. We hired a 9-seater vehicle directly from the hotel (Image 1️⃣0️⃣) for 12 hours at 2.

🌟 After breakfast at the hotel, we set off at 9:30 AM for Prambanan Temple (Images 2️⃣-4️⃣).
Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple complex on Java Island, built in the 9th century, dedicated to Shiva. The main tower reaches 47 meters, with exquisite carvings depicting epic stories like the Ramayana.

⚠️ Be sure to protect yourself from the sun; an hour of exposure can be intense. Besides the temples, there are also some enclosures with deer, peacocks, and amusement facilities, making it quite a mixed experience.

🍴 At 1:00 PM, we arrived at the pre-booked Ayom Jogja restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant in the rice fields (Images 5️⃣-6️⃣). The ambiance and food are excellent, and trains occasionally pass by.

🌟 The highlight of the trip—Borobudur (Image 7️⃣). Tickets are available for either climbing to the top or just viewing from below. It’s recommended to book the climb ticket in advance on the official website. We booked the last slot at 3:30 PM, with an hour and a half for the visit.
Borobudur is the most famous Buddhist site in Yogyakarta and the world’s largest Buddhist stupa.

Built in the 9th century, this massive stone structure consists of six square platforms, three circular platforms, and a central stupa, symbolizing the Buddhist cosmology.
Unfortunately, it rained heavily that afternoon, so our plan to watch the sunset was ruined. If you come during the rainy season, it’s better to go in the morning when the chance of rain is lower.

However, experiencing Borobudur in the rain and having it all to yourself is a unique experience.

🍴 In the evening, we tried Sasanti, a restaurant that Obama reportedly visited. The food was good, but the value for money wasn’t as high as Ayom, so it’s a moderate recommendation.

🌟 If you have time in the evening, you can stroll down Malioboro Street all the way to Alun Alun Kidul (the Southern Square), where there are many night market stalls. You can also try walking blindfolded between the two large trees in the square, as it is said that if you succeed, your wish will come true [Laughing R].
