I personally reside on the island of North Sumatra, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. Nestled on the Mada Plateau in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, Lake Toba is not just a stunning body of water; it’s a natural wonder. As the largest freshwater lake in Indonesia and the world’s largest volcanic lake, it captivates with its serene beauty and rich history.

In the heart of Lake Toba lies Samosir Island, a 45-kilometer-long and 20-kilometer-wide gem that was once a peninsula. In 1907, a canal transformed it into an island. This enchanting island, roughly the size of Singapore, is the fifth-largest lake island globally, offering a unique blend of culture and nature.

🛩 How to get there ❔
Embark on a scenic 45-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur or Penang to Kualanamu Airport in Medan, enjoying breathtaking views of the Malacca Strait along the way. Upon arrival, you can either take the airport bus or hire a car. We opted for a seven-seater vehicle with a Chinese-speaking driver, which cost us RMB 575 (IDR 375,000) per day, shared among four people.

The spacious back row was perfect for our luggage. The journey to Parapat dock on Lake Toba takes about 4.5 hours, where the driver will guide both the car and passengers across to the enchanting Samosir Island by ferry.
