When I first arrived in Australia, I was completely clueless about how to see a general practitioner (GP). My initial experience was rather discouraging; I was turned away from a clinic when I had COVID. To this day, I still find the Australian healthcare system frustrating—expensive and slow. Whenever I return to China, I make sure to get a comprehensive health check-up, and I even had my wisdom teeth removed there.

It wasn’t until I met a fantastic Chinese GP named Peter that I began to have a slightly more positive view of the Australian healthcare system. Last year, I suffered from a sore throat and neck pain for an entire month, and I was at a loss as to what could be causing it. I was so worried that I even feared the worst.

Finally, I decided to see Peter, and after two blood tests, he diagnosed me with subacute thyroiditis. He went the extra mile by printing out several pages in Chinese, explaining the causes, treatment, and other details about the condition. Given that my insurance has an annual reimbursement limit of $300 for seeing a GP and getting tests, I always ask about the cost of each test.

Peter inquired about my insurance and, on the spot, looked up online that if I upgraded my insurance, it wouldn’t cost much more, but I could get unlimited reimbursement for GP visits and blood tests, as well as partial reimbursement for ultrasounds. His consideration for my financial situation was truly commendable.

A month later, during the Spring Festival, I returned to China and underwent a series of check-ups. I met a highly experienced endocrinologist who also diagnosed me with subacute thyroiditis and reassured me not to be too anxious. He advised me to have regular blood tests to adjust the medication and to continue living a normal life.

After my holiday, I returned to Sydney. I needed to have a blood test once a month. After writing the order for the blood test, Dr. Peter would help me schedule the next appointment with him, often just over the phone, so I didn’t need to take time off work. The blood test results would be sent to me, and he would write the order for the next blood test and email it to me.

In short, I am incredibly grateful to such a caring and efficient doctor. I felt compelled to write this post about him, hoping to help others in need. Of course, I wish everyone good health and the best of luck in never needing to see a GP.
