Discover Milford Sound & Best Hiking Trails: Ultimate Guide
Some tips for Milford:
1. Booking: We secured our Milford Sound cruise tickets through the Bookme app, where discounts fluctuate depending on the time of day. Morning tickets are generally more affordable, while afternoon tickets tend to be pricier. Mornings offer a more serene experience with fewer crowds and no tour groups, whereas afternoons see an influx of group tours.

Our ticket included both the boat ride and access to an underwater observatory. After about an hour of sailing, we arrived at the observatory and disembarked. The observatory was modest; you can peer through the glass into the water, but the clarity isn’t great. Still, there were some fish, corals, and other marine life to observe.

2. Parking: Avoid navigating directly to the main parking lot, as the fees can be quite steep. Instead, park for free at Deepwater Basin Parking & Bus and enjoy a leisurely 20-minute walk to the ticket collection point. This not only saves you money but also adds a pleasant stroll to your adventure.

3. Due to low rainfall, we missed out on the spectacular sight of the thousand waterfalls. If witnessing these natural wonders is a priority, make sure to plan your visit during a period of higher precipitation. Milford Sound, connected to the Pacific Ocean, boasts a stunning fjord landscape. Besides the waterfalls, the boat ride offers breathtaking views of the majestic fjords. As an added bonus, we were lucky enough to spot some playful dolphins during our trip!

4. Be prepared for the pesky sandflies in the parking area—they are the most annoying insects we encountered in New Zealand. In the first few days, I experienced painful swelling and itching from their bites, even with medication. It’s crucial to cover up and use insect repellent to avoid these discomforts. Trust me, it’s worth the extra effort to stay bite-free!

5. On your way to Milford, don’t miss the Lake Marian hiking trail. The round trip takes about 3 hours, but it’s not without its challenges. The path can be rugged and somewhat dangerous, so it’s important to be cautious. However, the reward at the end is well worth the effort. The serene and picturesque lake is a delightful surprise and a perfect spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty.
