Discover the Majestic Mt Cook: The Southern Hemisphere’s Alpine Paradise

From the serene Lake Tekapo to the breathtaking Hooker Valley Track, you’ll embark on a 120km journey, taking approximately 1.5 hours by car. Along the way, make sure to stop at the renowned Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Shop, where the iconic glass house offers stunning views of Mount Cook (check out “Photos 2-4” for a preview!

). As you continue on Highway 80, take a moment at the viewing platform to marvel at the 3,764-meter-high Mount Cook and the picturesque “milk lake,” Lake Pukaki (see “Photos 5-7”).

[Hiking Shoes R] Hooker Valley Track (see “Photos 8-11”): This is the most celebrated hiking trail in Mount Cook, leading you through three suspension bridges with the majestic Mount Cook as your constant companion. The trail culminates at the awe-inspiring Hooker Glacier and the tranquil Hooker Lake. The total distance is 10km, and the round trip typically takes about 3 hours.

[Hiking Shoes R] Tasman Glacier River: Head to the Tasman Glacier Car Park, where just a short walk into the parking area reveals a fork in the road (see “Photo 12”). If time is tight, you can head right immediately. Taking the left path, you’ll pass by the enchanting Blue Lake (see “Photo 13”) and the expansive Tasman Glacier (see “Photo 14”), offering panoramic views of the glacier.

Although official data suggests the full distance is 780m/15min, the uphill terrain and physical effort may extend your round trip to about 45 minutes. On the right, you’ll reach Tasman Lake and the Tasman River (see “Photos 15-17”). At the next junction, turning left leads to the boat dock, while right takes you to the edge of the glacial lake, where you can witness large floating ice blocks.

The official data states that the full distance is 1.3km/25min, with a relatively flat and less steep path.
