Tekapo is a world-renowned stargazing spot and a dark sky reserve. But it’s not just about stargazing; the scenery is also amazing! As my first stop in New Zealand, I was deeply rejuvenated here.

The lakeside is filled with lupines swaying in the wind, with ducks weaving through the flowers and seagulls occasionally flying by. There are many chairs by the lake, perfect for relaxing.

The sun rises at 6 am and sets around 9 pm, making the days very long, with plenty of time to do lots of things.

I recommend spending at least a full day in Tekapo:
🔹 In the morning, hike the Mt John Summit Circuit Track to the observatory. You can see distant snow-capped mountains and lakes, and overlook the entire town. The aerial view is stunning. Going in the morning is ideal as the light is favorable, and there are many little rabbits on the grasslands.

You might just want to lie on the grass all day! The hike has an elevation gain of about 300 meters, and you can walk a small loop around the observatory, taking 1-2 hours. If time is limited, you can also visit in the evening before sunset, which is also beautiful, though the distant mountains will be backlit and less clear.

🔹 In the afternoon, take a walk along the lakeside. The Church of the Good Shepherd is very crowded, but you can take photos from a different angle. For fewer people, continue eastward where there is a large field of lupines, which I think is the most beautiful place, and there are no tourists! 📸 Don’t miss the beautiful shot from the bridge overlooking the lake. Walking west towards the Lake Edge resort, you’ll find a beautiful yellow flower field in the water.

🌟 Some additional tips:
➊ The supermarket in the center of Tekapo is well-stocked, with affordable fruits and water. You don’t need to bring too much from elsewhere, although snacks like chips might be a bit more expensive, but still reasonable. If you’re heading to Mount Cook from Tekapo, it’s a good idea to stock up here.

For those driving, it’s still more cost-effective to buy more in Christchurch.
➋ There is a shuttle service from Tekapo to Mount Cook that makes stops at various points, costing 149 NZD per person, which is quite reasonable. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Mount Cook Village and stay overnight.

Accommodation in Mount Cook is a bit pricey, but I recommend experiencing it; booking in advance can save a lot. The view at the foot of the snowy mountains is really beautiful! I’m currently at the foot of Mount Cook, and the starry sky here is even more beautiful than in Tekapo.
