Best Hiking Trails and Scenic Routes in Bariloche’s Lake District, Argentina

When you think of Bariloche, do you only picture the Seven Lakes route? While it’s a classic, there’s so much more to explore, especially for those who love hiking at their own pace. Here are some of my personal favorite routes that offer a unique and exhilarating experience.

📍Cerro Otto: This is hands down my top pick in Bariloche. The trail is newly opened and not yet on Google Maps, making it a hidden gem. You’ll find the starting point opposite the Cerro Otto cable car, nestled in a small, enchanting forest. The homestay I stayed at is just a stone’s throw away, and the owner raved about this route.

Be prepared for a steep, almost vertical climb, with the cable car soaring overhead. The reward? Breathtaking views of the lake throughout your journey. The summit is also a popular spot for paragliding enthusiasts.
🚗Getting there is easy, with several bus routes from the city center. A taxi will cost you around 2000-3000 pesos.

📍Cerro Llao Llao: Tucked away in the charming town of Villa Tacul on the west side of Bariloche, this route offers a serene and delightful hike. From the panoramic viewpoint at the top, you’ll be treated to stunning vistas of the surrounding islands, lakes, and the snow-capped Andes along the Chile-Argentina border.
🚗A bus can take you to the nearby Hotel Llao Llao, and from there, it’s a pleasant ten-minute walk to the trailhead.

📍Bariloche Lakeshore Path: This scenic path takes you along the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake, passing by the historic old church and a picturesque beach. It’s a perfect escape from the bustling shopping streets.
🚗The path is conveniently within walking distance from the city center, making it an ideal choice for a leisurely stroll.

📍Refugio Frey: For a more adventurous day trip, this 20-kilometer round trip is a must. The endpoint is a serene lake halfway up a snowy mountain, where you’ll find a rustic, weathered hut for hikers to spend the night. The route is named after this iconic refuge.
🚗Bus line 55 can get you there, with departures every three hours. The starting point is near the Cerro Catedral ski resort, making it a convenient and scenic journey.
