Best Time to Visit and How to Explore Argentina Patagonia’s Seven Lakes Route on a Budget
The Seven Lakes Route in northern Patagonia is a breathtaking journey, featuring seven stunning lakes of various shapes and sizes along 110 kilometers of Argentina’s iconic Route 40. This scenic route is a must-see for any traveler, with its picturesque landscapes and serene waters. Typically, visitors opt for a one-day tour departing from nearby towns such as Bariloche, Villa La Angostura, or San Martin de los Andes.
These tours usually start around 8-9 am and return by 6-7 pm, with stops at each viewpoint or lake lasting about 20 minutes. The cost is approximately 40,000 pesos (around 260 USD with the black market exchange rate). The convenience and peace of mind make it an attractive option, especially for solo travelers.
However, the downside is the limited flexibility to explore at your own pace. If you do choose a group tour, it’s best not to book in Bariloche, as it is farther from the starting point of the route.
For a more personalized and flexible experience, I highly recommend self-driving, particularly if you’re traveling with others. Car rental costs range from 40,000 to 60,000 pesos, and fuel expenses are typically under 20,000 pesos. This option provides unparalleled freedom, allowing you to discover hidden gems and engage in water activities at your leisure.
Weather plays a crucial role in enhancing your experience on this route. It’s best to plan your trip on a sunny or partly cloudy day. Overcast conditions are tolerable, but rainy, snowy, or windy weather can significantly diminish the enjoyment of the journey.
Lastly, I strongly recommend a hidden gem (p12-p15) that I believe is the highlight of this route. This spot offers breathtaking scenery and the opportunity to enjoy water activities. Initially, I had planned to visit Villa Traful, but after consulting with locals, I discovered that the views were similar, saving me two hours of driving. However, only those who self-drive can access this enchanting location.
