Best One-day Trip to Namur and Dinant: How to Explore on a Budget in Spring

Attending the World Youth Science Conference in Belgium [Praise] This is my second time in Belgium. Six years ago, I had the pleasure of exploring the charming cities of Ghent, Bruges, Leuven, Hasselt, and Blankenberge. With only a single day to spare this time around, I faced a delightful dilemma: should I head to the bustling city of Antwerp or venture south?

Departing from Brussels by train, it took about an hour and a half to reach the enchanting town of Dinant. The locals in Dinant and Namur speak French, and you can’t help but smile as everyone greets you with a cheerful “bonjour!” [Crying Laughing] The heart of Dinant is the Charles de Gaulle Bridge (P2), adorned with flags from various countries and saxophone sculptures, including one representing China [Wow].

Across the bridge, the striking Notre-Dame Cathedral stands tall, and the colorful houses lining the riverbanks are a feast for the eyes (P3~P4). Next to the cathedral, you’ll find the entrance to the cable car, which takes you up the mountain to the historic Dinant Castle (P5). Inside, you can explore exhibits that recount the memories of World War I and ancient Belgium.

The journey from Dinant to Namur is a short and scenic one, with the train ride offering stunning views of riverside towns (P9~P10). Namur is a treasure trove of churches and squares, and its streets exude a quintessential European charm (P11). Like in Dinant, you can take a cable car up to the Namur Castle (P12), but I highly recommend buying only a one-way ticket!

Most of the spectacular sights are best enjoyed while descending, a tip that’s often overlooked on Little Red Book [Crying]. The view from the castle also provides a sweeping vista of the entire Namur (P13~P16), similar to what you see in Dinant, but with a more vibrant and lively atmosphere [Observing].
