Chile 🇨🇱 boasts a total of 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites, and Valparaíso is a jewel among them. Nestled on the coast west of the capital, Santiago, this vibrant city was recognized for its distinctive topography, a kaleidoscope of colorful buildings, labyrinthine streets, and its historical significance as a vital port in the 19th century.
During my wanderings, I stumbled upon an artist diligently painting at their doorstep (p2, p3). After conceptualizing the design, it takes at least a week to bring such a mural to life. I was particularly captivated by a brightly colored llama, which only then made me realize that each artwork is a reflection of the homeowner’s personality.
Gazing at the graffiti behind, each piece seemed to tell a story, inviting me to imagine the unique character of each owner—whether elegant, whimsical, satirical, or abstract. The walls of this historic mountain city are a canvas for all sorts of expressions.
[Red Book R] For those eager to explore the graffiti, a classic route begins at Plaza Sotomayor-Valparaíso (p9). From there, you can make your way to several viewpoints, including Ascensor El Peral and Cerro Concepción Valparaíso. One of the most breathtaking vantage points is Mirador Paseo Atkinson, offering a panoramic view of the coastline.
Continue along the enchanting Piano Staircase (p1) until you reach Ascensor Reina Victoria (p11), a historic elevator that has been in operation since 1902.
[Red Book R] For a deeper dive into the city’s history, consider visiting the Valparaiso Cultural Park, a former prison that once held political prisoners during the dictatorship. Another must-see is La Sebastiana Museo de Pablo Neruda, the former residence of the renowned Chilean poet. This five-story mansion, perched overlooking the sea, is a true ode to poetic living.
[Star R] Tips: As this is a hilly area with sparse population, it’s common to find yourself alone while exploring, so safety precautions are advised. It’s recommended to stay overnight in the nearby, more modern Viña del Mar after a day trip. This lively seaside town offers a vibrant atmosphere and a beautiful coastal setting.
