– The closest town to the desert, where you can book tours and find accommodations. It serves as the perfect base for your Atacama adventures.
2️⃣ Calama
– Home to the nearest airport, El Loa Airport, which is easily accessible by flights from Santiago.
– If you’re planning a trip to Bolivia, the Bolivian consulate for visa processing is located here, open at 9 AM on weekdays.
3️⃣ Airport <—> Calama City: Uber is a convenient option for getting around.
4️⃣ San Pedro de Atacama <—> Calama Airport
– Travel time: 1-1.5 hours
– Common transportation methods:
– I booked a transfer directly from an Atacama transfer company, which cost 15,000 CLP per person. The service included a comfortable, clean, and spacious 10-seater van that picked us up right from the hotel.
– Airport shuttle buses are also available.
– Other reliable companies like Turistour, Transvip, and Transferpampa offer similar services.
5️⃣ San Pedro de Atacama <—> Calama City
– Travel time: 1-1.5 hours
– Common transportation methods:
– Buses operated by Frontera del Norte, costing 5,000 CLP per person, provide a budget-friendly and efficient way to travel between the two destinations.
6️⃣ Atacama —> Uyuni, Bolivia
– For those looking to explore further, a bus departs at 3:30 AM.

– Alternatively, you can opt for a 3-day, 2-night tour that departs directly from Atacama, offering a more immersive experience.
7️⃣ Calama —> Uyuni, Bolivia
– Bus, departs at 6 AM.
– Minivan, departs at 9 AM, with a travel time of 8 hours (including border crossing). The minivan is operated by Trans Ricardo, and the boarding point is called Trans Ricardo Calama a Uyuni, located outside a supermarket on a small road next to an open square. As you approach, someone will ask if you are heading to Uyuni and then check your ticket.
