Easter Island has always been a place of enchantment, brimming with an aura of mysterious power. Indeed, reaching this remote gem requires a significant effort.
Despite its modest size and a population of just around 5,000, the journey from the capital Santiago to the island is a 5.5-hour flight. With only one daily flight in and out, the island maintains strict control over visitors. You must adhere to the number of days you declare for your stay. Additionally, the island prohibits external investment in construction, which means that the food and accommodation options are quite basic. Be sure to come with the right mindset and expectations.
Perhaps my expectations for Easter Island were set too high, and I was somewhat taken aback by the reality. I had envisioned it rivaling the mystique of Egypt, but unlike the numerous awe-inspiring sites in Egypt, Easter Island’s iconic statues 🗿 are undeniably man-made.
Upon arriving at this small Pacific island, I truly felt the essence of the saying: Loneliness, if you mind it, is loneliness; if you enjoy it, it’s freedom. The isolation and simplicity of the island offer a unique and profound experience.
PS: In Figure 18, you can see the Easter Island stamp on my passport. Please consider carefully before embarking on this journey. Since Chile allows entry with a US visa, you need to carry an old passport with a valid US visa. Thus, my stamp is on the old passport. Always be cautious about getting stamps on your new passport, as there is a risk of it being deemed invalid by customs and refused for use.
