Starting from Puerto Montt, to the north lies one of the most enchanting regions of central-southern Chile—the Lake District. In just under half an hour by car, you’ll find yourself in the charming town of Puerto Varas, nestled on the shores of the stunning Lake Llanquihue. As you drive along the lake for another hour, you’ll pass through several picturesque lakeside towns, including Llanquihue and Frutillar, each with its own unique character and charm.
On the other side of the lake, two perfectly shaped volcanoes dominate the skyline, making this area a renowned hiking paradise. Though we only had time to admire the breathtaking lake and mountain scenery from the lakeshore, the leisurely stroll by the water was utterly captivating.
To the south of Puerto Montt, a scenic journey by car and ferry will take you to the more off-the-beaten-path destination of Chiloé Island. Castro, the largest city here, is famous for its vibrant stilt houses that line the coast. Staying overnight in one of these stilt houses offers a unique experience, allowing you to watch the tides ebb and flow and observe large flocks of black-necked swans as they rest and play.
We also visited a popular and photogenic spot on the island called the Pier of Souls (Muelle de Las Almas). While the pictures are beautiful, being there in person provides a deeper, more authentic experience that goes beyond the lens.
As relatively less-visited regions, the Lake District and Chiloé Island offer a more serene and intimate atmosphere, with fewer domestic tourists and better value for accommodation and dining compared to other parts of Chile. Over three or four days, you may not encounter breathtakingly magnificent landscapes, but the tranquil and relaxing ambiance makes it a truly unique and memorable part of your Chilean adventure.
