You can opt for a one-day tour from Puerto Montt or extend your stay to a week for a more immersive experience. I chose a 3-day, 3-night itinerary, which felt just right.
2. Where to stay? Castro, the island’s vibrant hub, is the ideal base. From here, you can easily access other parts of the island, making it a convenient and central location.
3. How to get there? After reviewing numerous posts on Xiaohongshu, self-driving seems to be the most popular choice. For those who prefer public transport, a bus from Puerto Montt takes about 4 hours and costs 10,000 pesos. Buses run frequently throughout the day, providing plenty of options.
Three-day itinerary as follows:
Day 1. Three towns in one day: Castro – Achao – Curaco – Dalcahue – Castro
Start your journey at the central station, where frequent buses are available. Each town, though small, is centered around a charming church square and features a picturesque waterfront (it’s often hard to tell if it’s a lake or the sea).
The colorful shingled houses, each unique in style and hue, create a harmonious and visually delightful atmosphere. Take your time to explore, relax, and enjoy local cuisine (which is generally more affordable than in Castro)!
Day 2. Visit the enigmatic [Muelle de las Almas], a site steeped in local legend. It is said that standing on the pier and calling out the name of a deceased loved one will summon a boat to ferry their soul to the afterlife. Alternatively, the soul may wander along the shore. At the bus station, you can purchase a three-way ticket: Castro – National Park – Muelle de las Almas – National Park – Castro.
The trek to Muelle de las Almas takes 45 minutes to an hour, with some elevation changes, making it moderately challenging. Bring a hiking stick, wear long sleeves and pants, and don’t forget the mosquito repellent! Horseflies can be a nuisance, so come prepared.
At Muelle de las Almas, expect to find a queue of visitors, especially foreigners eager to capture the perfect photo. Be mindful of the return bus schedule; there’s only one, and missing it would be quite inconvenient.
Day 3. Explore Castro:
(1) Church Square: A must-visit for its historical and cultural significance.
(2) Seaside market: Offers a variety of handmade crafts and several restaurants (prices vary).
(3) Several viewpoints: Enjoy panoramic views of the river and stilt houses.
(4) 45-minute boat tour: A scenic and relaxing way to see the area.
(5) Yumbel market: Known for its fresh salmon and local seafood, it’s a great place to grab a budget-friendly meal. Address: Yumbel 863.
Note: The paths to and from the seaside can be steep, so it’s best to leave your luggage behind.
