Nestled on a serene evergreen meadow, this luxurious mansion offers breathtaking views of the inland sea of Chiloé Island in Chile. The building is a masterpiece of both elegance and innovation, serving as both a half-house and a dual-residence.
🌿 The Meeting of Cone and Cylinder
This architectural marvel is dubbed a half-house due to its unique formation by the intersection of a cone and a cylinder, with the junction intentionally interrupted.
It’s also a dual-residence because, after removing a rectangular section at the base, two symmetrical rooms are created. These rooms, positioned at opposite ends of a linear sequence, one bathed in direct warm sunlight and the other in indirect cool light, create a harmonious balance. The design evokes an image of a cylinder sliced along its diameter and fused with an inverted cone, resulting in a sloping roof that encircles the structure.
🌿 The Asymmetrical Beauty of the Architecture
The architect explains, “The overall curved form is strikingly asymmetrical. From one angle, it presents a robust and enclosed sanctuary, while from another, it appears almost weightless, with just a large sloping roof and minimal supporting walls.” This asymmetry lends the structure a uniquely captivating and dynamic presence.
🌿 Large Spaces and Courtyards
Between the two parallel rooms, there is a generous open space. Part of this area is designed as a courtyard, complete with two rain-shielding eaves and three wind-blocking walls. This thoughtful layout allows residents to enjoy the outdoors in a sheltered and comfortable setting, blending the indoors and outdoors seamlessly.
🌿 Built with Local Wood
The entire building is crafted from local wood, supported by forty-five rigid frames. The walls and ceilings are clad in wooden planks, and the conical roof is covered with traditional thin wooden shingles. This choice not only underscores the natural beauty of the architecture but also pays homage to the local cultural heritage.
🌿 The Mysterious Island and Carpentry Skills
Chiloé Island is renowned for its rich mythology and exceptional woodworking craftsmanship. In this project, the architects drew inspiration from the island’s local knowledge, aiming to capture the refined simplicity embodied in the forgotten art of wooden padlocks.
This blend of tradition and modernity results in a truly unique and enchanting dwelling.
