[About the Los Tres Hiking Trail]
This trail is the most renowned, and the official website rates it as “Hard.” However, for us two novices who had never attempted serious hiking before, we found it quite manageable by taking it at a leisurely pace.

(Picture 2) We set off early in the morning, even on a sunny, breezy day, the areas untouched by the sun were surprisingly chilly. Interestingly, there were also some intrepid foreigners braving the cold in shorts.

(Pictures 3-5) The first 90% of the trail is relatively flat, offering breathtaking views. It’s advisable to take your time, savoring each step rather than rushing through. The journey is not just about reaching the destination; it’s about immersing yourself in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

(Picture 6) The final 1-2 kilometers are an uphill climb, and signs along the way remind hikers that good physical condition is essential.

(Picture 7) At the endpoint, the water of Los Tres glows a stunning azure blue under the sunlight (as seen in the first picture), while from a distance, it takes on a deep, mesmerizing lake blue (Picture 7). Here, you can marvel at the unique shape of the Fitz Roy mountain peak and the precarious snow blocks that might tumble down at any moment, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience.

(Picture 8) The descent was the most challenging part for me. Not only was I physically exhausted from the earlier ascent, but the slippery path made every step a bit nerve-wracking. Despite the frequent slips, the good news is that the terrain is not as perilous as many Chinese mountain paths, so the risk of a fatal fall is minimal.

I wore regular running shoes, but even those around me with proper hiking gear and trekking poles were struggling. In the last 10% of the descent, my knees began to ache from the constant “braking,” and it felt like the brake pads were about to overheat 😂

Finally, at the end of the journey, everyone’s faces were lit up with smiles and relief, as the hardships of the ascent and descent faded into distant memories.
[Other Tips]
1. If you plan to hike in Chalten, you’ll likely pass through Calafate, which isn’t a place to linger. It’s best to take a direct bus to Chalten after landing. If you have the budget, visit the glaciers, but don’t stay too long.
2. Book your accommodation or car rental well in advance. We faced the frustration of not being able to secure consecutive bookings at the last minute and had to switch places, which was quite inconvenient.
3. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent when hiking. While it may seem obvious, it’s crucial for a comfortable and safe experience.
4. To save money, buy beef from the local supermarket. Here, only beef is worth the price. Two large steaks for just $5, and they are incredibly delicious.
5. If possible, extend your stay in the town and choose the best weather to go up the mountain for the most rewarding and fulfilling experience.
