Affordable Antarctica Adventure: Explore the South Pole for Just 35,000 RMB
I set out on a global adventure that led me to Argentina, never intending to venture as far as Antarctica. Fate, however, had other plans, and I stumbled upon an incredible last-minute deal for an Antarctic cruise, securing my ticket for just over 30,000 RMB. Typically, such a journey can cost anywhere from 80,000 to 150,000 RMB, depending on the season, booking time, cruise company, and trip duration.

For those with a tighter budget but still dreaming of the icy continent, here’s how I made it happen:

My Expenses:
– Cruise Ticket: 4999 RMB
– Hostel Accommodation in Ushuaia (4 days): 50 RMB x 4
– Flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia: 700 RMB
– Meals: Self-cooked + king crab, approximately 200 RMB per person
– Waterproof pants, hats, and gloves provided by the cruise company.

📖 Travel Preparation:
1. Visa: Obtain a 10-year visa domestically or apply for a 3-month e-visa abroad for 200 USD, which takes about 20 days.
2. Get a local SIM card.
3. Bring some US dollars to exchange for pesos.
4. Prepare a VISA card.
5. Print out your e-visa.

Common Apps:
– 💰 Currency Conversion: It’s more cost-effective to exchange with fellow Chinese travelers rather than at a bank.
– 🗺️ Google Maps
– 🗣️ Translation App for Spanish
– 🚘 Skyscanner: Book flights in advance.
– ☎️ Communication: WhatsApp
– 🏠 Airbnb, Booking, or search for accommodation + contact information on the map.

My Money-Saving Tips:
1. I snagged a last-minute deal, originally priced at 10,000 USD, for just 4999 USD for a 10-day tour. Don’t book your Antarctic cruise ticket a year in advance; tickets booked one or two years ahead are usually 10-20% off, six months ahead 30% off, and half a month to a month ahead, there are special deals with 30-50% off.

2. Apply for the Argentine visa in advance and plan your timing. Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, inquire with local travel agencies about any special deals.
3. In Ushuaia, directly approach travel agencies to find the cheapest and most suitable cruise ticket. Prices for Antarctic cruises are generally the same across all companies, though the perks may vary.

4. In Ushuaia, you can find Friendship, where a girl from Hong Kong works (she will provide you with hats and gloves). However, personally, I found the after-sales service lacking. Consider checking out more companies.
5. Accommodation and meals in Ushuaia are quite expensive. It’s not advisable to wait here for special deals; instead, consider waiting in Buenos Aires.

6. Antarctic trips range from 10 to 30 days, including Peninsula tours, three-island tours, and Peninsula + Polar Circle tours.
7. Personally, I found that 12-15 days is the ideal duration. Longer stays can lead to visual fatigue as the scenery becomes repetitive.
Recommended Cruise Companies:
– Quark: Offers a variety of activities.
– Swan: Boasts excellent onboard facilities.
Avoid:
– Ushuaia: The facilities are outdated, and the experience on the small boat is mediocre.
