Discover the Majestic Sounds of Glaciers Calving in Calafate
🏔️ The Moreno Glacier in Calafate, Argentina, stands as one of the world’s most impressive glaciers. While many glaciers are shrinking due to global warming, this majestic wonder remains largely unaffected, maintaining its awe-inspiring size. No photograph can truly capture its grandeur; the glacier towers as high as a 20-story building, and you can witness the breathtaking spectacle of ice calving, where massive chunks of ice break off and crash into the water.

✈️ Direct flights to this natural marvel are available from Ushuaia or Buenos Aires. If you’re starting from El Chalten, a scenic bus ride of about three and a half hours will bring you to the glacier.

👟 I highly recommend joining a guided tour for an unforgettable glacier trekking experience. Hielo y Aventura, the only authorized local travel agency, offers two thrilling options: mini trekking and big ice. For most adventurers, the mini trekking is more than enough, providing over an hour of walking on the glacier with crampons, guided by experienced professionals.

The big ice option offers a more extensive and immersive journey, with the added chance of exploring ice caves (though they are not guaranteed and are not part of the mini trekking route). Each day, the guides carefully choose the safest and most scenic routes based on the weather, ensuring a unique and safe experience.

At the end of your trek, you’ll be treated to a shot of whiskey chilled with a piece of glacier ice—a perfect way to toast to your adventure!

I opted for the mini trekking, and it was an incredible experience. Our day began at 8:30 AM when a minibus picked us up from the hotel. We started with a boat ride to the glacier, followed by an afternoon hike along a trail that offered panoramic views of the glacier. The entire excursion lasted about nine hours, and we were conveniently dropped back at our hotel by the end of the day.

💰 The cost varies depending on the season, but it’s definitely an investment. When I went in late March, the mini trekking cost around $220. Additionally, you need to purchase an entrance ticket to the glacier park, which, while not too expensive, is an essential part of the overall cost. The big ice option is even pricier, likely exceeding $300. Be sure to check the official website for the most up-to-date pricing and details.

🎒 Dress warmly and wear windproof clothing, as the boat ride and glacier trekking can be quite chilly. Hats and gloves are a must, especially since some parts of the trek require using your hands, and gloves provide protection from sharp ice. Don’t forget to bring water and snacks, as there is only one restaurant available during the afternoon hike. For lunch after the morning trek, you’ll need to rely on the provisions you bring.

⚠️ During the Argentine winter, which lasts for about a month and a half, glacier trekking is not possible. Always check the official website for specific opening times. As only one travel agency offers these tours, spots are limited, so booking in advance is crucial. I booked my trip two months ahead to secure my spot.
