In recent years, Argentine cuisine has garnered global acclaim for its distinctive flavors and culinary techniques. A prime example is the Argentine choripán, which was recently crowned the world’s best “hot dog” by the food magazine Taste Atlas.

The choripán is a beloved street food in Argentina, featuring a grilled sausage nestled in crispy bread and slathered with a variety of sauces. This sandwich delivers a triple taste sensation that leaves a lasting impression. It’s a common find during travels, primarily sold at street stalls across Latin America, making it a must-try for any food enthusiast.

The ranking also highlighted nine other sandwiches from countries such as the United States, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Denmark, and South Korea. Taste Atlas recommended pairing the choripán with chimichurri sauce and a glass of Argentine Pais red wine for an exquisite experience. The Pais grapes, originally brought from Spain to South America, produce wines that are typically fresh, with a light to medium body, and boast aromas and flavors of fruit, earth, and herbs.

Coming in second place is the “Chicago-style hot dog,” known for its poppy seed bun and an array of toppings: green relish, yellow mustard, diced fresh onions, red tomato slices, kosher pickles, a dash of sport peppers, and a sprinkle of celery salt. This combination creates a symphony of flavors that is both unique and satisfying.
The “Colombian hot dog” takes third place, celebrated for its generous size and unconventional sauces, adding a twist to the traditional hot dog experience.
It’s also noteworthy that the Argentine asado was recently selected by Taste Atlas as the “Dish of the Week.” Not only that, but the Argentine charcoal grilling techniques and provoleta (grilled provolone cheese) were also featured. The asado is more than just a meal; it’s a cultural and social event that brings together friends and family to enjoy the art of outdoor cooking.
In Argentina, as well as in Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and several other South American countries, the asado is a cherished tradition. A wide variety of meat cuts can be chosen, but in Argentina, beef is the star of the show.
As described by the magazine, a typical Argentine asado includes grilled tripe, blood sausage, sausages, ribs, sirloin, brisket, and tenderloin. Grilled provoleta, a classic side, adds a delightful, melty texture to the feast.
