Shocking First Night in Argentina: Phone Snatched by Motorbike Thief Experience

🩵Background
Before my trip, I had heard that Buenos Aires is considered the safest city in South America, with a general sense of personal safety. However, I was also warned to be cautious of pickpockets who might target phones and cash. To stay safe, I brought along a plain waist bag and a phone case with a wrist strap for added security.

Upon arrival, locals echoed the same advice: Buenos Aires is indeed quite safe, but it’s wise to avoid using your phone on the street. If you must, they suggested holding it tightly with both hands.

🩵Incident
At 6:30 in the morning, after a night out at a nightclub, I finally managed to hail an Uber. The driver was supposed to arrive in just three minutes, but he got stuck in traffic and messaged me about the delay. Standing by the roadside, I held my phone securely with both hands as I replied to him.

I noticed a person on a motorcycle parked about five meters away. Since he wasn’t moving, I assumed he was waiting for someone and let my guard down. Little did I know, he was actually waiting for me! As soon as he saw me take out my phone to send a message, he revved up and drove straight towards me!

I always thought such incidents only happened on busy roads, but here it was, right on the sidewalk! Before I could even react, he zipped past me in a flash, and I felt a sharp pain in my hand. But, to my relief, my phone was still firmly in my grip! I realized I had just experienced a drive-by robbery—on my very first night in Buenos Aires!

I was incredibly grateful that I had held on tight.

🩵Human Warmth
In the heat of the moment, I shouted “F U” in the direction the motorcyclist sped off. Surprisingly, four or five local Argentinians nearby, who spoke English, rushed over to ask what had happened. I explained that the guy on the motorcycle had almost snatched my phone. One of them immediately asked, “Are you okay?

” I assured them I was fine, and their concern was truly touching. They stayed with me, sharing that such incidents are, unfortunately, common throughout South America. They advised me to be extra vigilant against motorbike thieves and to protect my phone. Their repeated inquiries about my well-being were incredibly heartwarming.

They even offered to wait with me until my Uber arrived. During our wait, we exchanged Instagrams, and they told me to message them when I got home safely. They also invited me to join them if I wanted to go to a party later. I was deeply moved by their kindness and genuine warmth. It was a reminder that there is true humanity and compassion in the world, and especially in Argentina!

🩵Reflection
Despite my thorough preparation and extra caution, this incident still occurred. Fortunately, I managed to keep my phone, which, while not ideal, is a part of the travel experience in South America. So, friends, when traveling to Argentina, be extra, extra careful! Try to avoid using your phone on the street, and if you must, always be fully aware of your surroundings.
