Discover Rottnest Island: Ultimate Guide to Quokka Encounters and Island Adventures

Western Australia is truly a travel destination that surpasses all expectations, and I would confidently call it the hidden gem of the UTC+8 time zone. The sea here is a mesmerizing, dazzling blue, and just gazing at it can instantly refresh your spirit. The Mediterranean climate adds to the charm, providing a comfortable and delightful experience for those who love coastal living.

Rotto, this enchanting little island, is just an hour’s boat ride from the bustling city of Perth. Despite its small size, Rotto packs a punch with its stunning bays and breathtaking views. A bus ride around the island takes only 60 minutes, but each stop offers a unique and captivating vista. One moment, you might find yourself admiring a gentle, clear natural pool that reflects four shades of blue, and the next, you could be marveling at the dramatic sight of Indian Ocean waves crashing against rugged cliffs.

I highly recommend making a stop at the 3rd stop, where you’ll discover a small wrecked ship just 20 meters offshore. This spot also offers a mirage-like view of the distant CBD (Figure 1). If you plan to snorkel, be cautious; there’s a gray area in Figure 2, which marks a massive reef teeming with underwater plants. It’s best to avoid going into the water alone.

Next, hop off at the 5th stop, Parker Point, and take a leisurely stroll. Feel the sand between your toes and dip your feet in the cool seawater as you make your way to the 7th stop, Salmon Bay. The waters here are so clear and inviting, they resemble a jelly sea. If you look closely, you might even spot the tiny footprints of the adorable Quokkas.

The 8th stop is the iconic lighthouse, and the 11th stop, West End, is located at the very tip of the island. Here, strong winds and waves create the perfect environment for spotting marine life, such as sea lions, dolphins, and whales. Even small eagles nest in this area. Recently, while observing sea lions in Jurien Bay, our guide mentioned that some single, courting sea lions have been seen wandering near Rotto, making it a bit like a 🦭 version of a bar street.

Stops 12-19 are on the other side of the island, and if you have the time, any of these stops are perfect for lounging on the beach, as they attract far fewer tourists.

Quokkas, the island’s most charming residents, usually sleep in shady spots under trees or in corners. After 2-3 PM, they wake up and start foraging. You can see them everywhere on the grass near the pier, but please remember not to feed or touch them. If you sit quietly, these curious creatures will often approach you on their own.

When hunger strikes, head to Dome Cafe, a well-known chain in Western Australia known for its consistent quality. Whether you’re in the mood for a light meal or something more substantial, a Flat white and a bite to eat will recharge your energy.

As you board the return boat at 5 PM, prepare to be awed by a stunning sunset, providing the perfect finale to a busy day.

A final reminder: Sun protection is crucial! The UV rays on the island are extremely strong, and there is little shade throughout the trip. The temperature can vary by up to 15 degrees between midday and night, so stay hydrated to prevent heatstroke.
