Explore Sunshine City: Brisbane’s Best City Walk Experience
Hi everyone, thank you so much for your attention and private messages, and for sticking with us 🙏. After more than a month in Australia, we’ve finally settled into our new routine, getting Isabella set up with school, tennis, and swimming. Last weekend, we explored downtown Brisbane, and I’m excited to share this belated update with you.
Brisbane, the vibrant capital of Queensland and the third-largest city in Australia, is a place where the Brisbane River meanders through the city in an S-shape, dividing it into the South Bank and North Bank. Our city walk was centered around this picturesque river, and here are some highlights:
1: South Bank Parklands
This is one of Brisbane’s most beloved attractions! The South Bank Parklands were originally the site of the 1988 World Expo and have since been transformed into a fantastic spot for barbecues, picnics, and Ferris wheel rides. The standout feature is the free man-made beach, where you can splash around while enjoying the stunning city views.
The playgrounds here are also uniquely designed, making them a hit with kids. To the southeast, you’ll find Griffith University, and there’s a bustling street filled with bars and restaurants, making it a perfect place for locals to unwind. On Friday nights, the area comes alive with a laid-back vibe, which is perhaps why Australians often say, “no worries.

2: Brisbane River
Hop on the red City Hopper Ferries for a leisurely cruise along the Brisbane River and soak in the breathtaking cityscape! The entire Brisbane CBD is built around this river, and as you stroll, you’ll encounter charming Victorian-era buildings, Gothic churches, and lively street performances. There are also large shopping centers and a variety of delicious eateries, all within easy walking distance.
3: Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and Queensland Art Gallery
These two galleries house over ten thousand artworks from Australia and beyond, each with its own unique character. GOMA offers weekly themed activities for children, such as painting sessions, making it a great family destination. The Queensland Art Gallery, situated along the Brisbane River, features a scenic path where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Brisbane CBD.
The gallery’s architecture is just as captivating as the exhibits inside, with some even arguing that the building itself is the main attraction. The first floor includes an independent screening room and a children’s art exhibition area. In the gallery’s restaurant, the ceiling is adorned with artworks, creating a mesmerizing visual experience that blends seamlessly with the lush greenery outside.
