Finally, I reached the last stop in Chile, famously known as the “driest place on Earth” β the Atacama Desert ποΈ. Over the course of two days and one night, I meticulously planned four half-day tours: a breathtaking sunset at Moon Valley, an awe-inspiring stargazing session π, a visit to the geysers, and an exploration of the salt flats.
Additionally, I arranged for seamless airport shuttle bus services π, ensuring everything was perfectly connected. I highly recommend the Moon Valley and geysers; if you have more time, a full-day tour is also worth considering.
Regarding flights βοΈ and airport transfers π
To maximize my time, I booked the earliest and latest flights from Santiago to Calama, H2240 and LA375. The early morning arrival in Calama at 7 AM can be quite chilly, so it’s essential to pack some warm clothing. After booking the airport transfer online, they provided clear instructions on the meeting point.
Upon arrival, a friendly representative with a sign greeted us. Once all passengers were gathered, the bus set off, taking approximately an hour and a half to reach San Pedro de Atacama.
Regarding accommodation π¨
I spent a single night in a cozy single room at Hostel Campo Base. The conditions were comfortable, and there are numerous options in town, with hotels offering even more luxurious amenities. I was fortunate to check in right after arriving at 11 AM, which was a pleasant surprise.
Regarding Tours and City Walks πΆ
San Pedro de Atacama is a charming, small town, and due to its arid climate, there’s often a lot of flying sand. The town is characterized by low buildings, giving it a unique “loess plateau” feel. After checking in, I made a quick trip to buy water (it’s recommended to have around 2.
5L per day) and took a leisurely walk around the town. My first impression was “dry,” but the town is well-stocked with supplies, and you can easily find food and drinks.
You can sign up for tours directly in the town, but some popular ones, like the Moon Valley and salt flats, may need to be booked in advance, along with the necessary tickets.
Both online and offline bookings will provide reminders (make sure to have cash, as credit cards are not accepted for ticket purchases). To ensure a smooth experience, I pre-booked everything online. All tours will remind you to bring about 1L of water, and it’s wise to pack a sun hatπ, sunscreen, and some energy bars or chocolate for emergencies.
1. Moon Valley π: Departure at 3:30 PM. Nestled in a serene landscape, Moon Valley offers a tranquil escape. The guide will lead you through the quiet paths, allowing you to immerse yourself in the profound silence of the valley. Savor the delightful afternoon tea, cocktails, and snacks provided, which add a touch of luxury to your experience. The highlight is undoubtedly the breathtaking sunset, a sight that will leave you in awe and make this trip truly unforgettable.
2. Stargazing π: Departure at 9:30 PM. This magical evening includes a photography session, a delicious late-night snack, and an enchanting stargazing experience with telescopes. On a clear night, the stars shine brightly, and the photos you capture will be stunning. The snack is a delightful treat, and peering through the telescope, you’ll witness the moon in all its natural glory, a far cry from any AI-generated image.
3. Geysers β²οΈ: Departure at 4:30 AM. Prepare for an early morning adventure to a destination over 4200 meters above sea level. It’s advisable to avoid heavy meals and alcohol the night before to prevent altitude sickness. Make sure to bundle up with warm clothing, as the sun will just be rising when you arrive, and the temperature can be quite chilly.
A hearty breakfast is included, and after refueling, you’ll pass by the picturesque Flamingo Lake on your way back to town, adding a scenic touch to your journey.
4. Salt Flats: Departure at 2 PM. Start with a unique salt flat swimming experience, where you can float effortlessly in the briny waters. Remember to bring a towel (you can wear your swimsuit in advance, as there are changing rooms and freshwater showers available). After the swim, explore the vast, otherworldly salt flats, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea β. The combination of these activities makes for a memorable and rejuvenating day out.
