Whether Valparaiso is worth visiting is a bit controversial, it really depends on personal preference. I personally found it interesting but not a “must-see.” If you still want to go, I recommend combining it with a 3-4 day trip to the nearby Vina del Mar and Concon.

✔️ Fun: Unique graffiti, various colorful houses in the old town, with a sense of decay
❌ Not fun: Walking in the mountain city can be tiring, the old town is dirty and disorderly, and safety is a concern
ℹ️ Hotel: We stayed at ibis Valparaiso, which is conveniently located for sightseeing. The rooms are quite basic but the price is cheap.

The hotel has a paid parking lot, so it’s safe for those who drive.
⚠️ Safety: More than once, locals on the street warned us to be careful with our phones and cameras. Even the hotel pulls down iron gates and has security guards at night, indicating that it might not be very peaceful in the evening.

📷 Attractions: The entire old town is covered in graffiti, and the main photo spots are relatively concentrated, so it’s easy to explore on foot. I started from Sotomayor Square📍, walked to the Rainbow Stairs📍Escalera de Colores, then slowly made my way to Concepción Hill📍Cerro Concepción Valparaíso, Gervasoni Walkway Viewpoint📍Paseo Gervasoni, Atkinson Walkway Viewpoint📍Mirador Paseo Atkinson, and finally to the Holy Cross Lutheran Church📍Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross.

Basically, wherever you walk, there are graffiti scenes.

Other attractions:
📍Museo a Cielo Abierto: Next to the old town, fewer tourists here because it’s a bit far to walk, and if you don’t have a car, you can skip it.
📍Mirador lobos: A 10-minute drive from the old town, where you can see sea lions, seabirds, and the coastline.

You can check my previous notes (if you don’t have a car, you can skip it).
📍Mirador Faro Punta Angeles: A sunset viewing spot, with a lighthouse halfway up the hill (if you don’t have a car, you can skip it).
