The Hand in the Desert is a striking sculpture nestled in the heart of Chile’s Atacama Province, within the arid expanse of the Atacama Desert. Towering at approximately 11 meters in height and spanning 3 meters in width, this monumental hand emerges from the endless sea of sand, creating a solitary and awe-inspiring sight.
Rising majestically from one of the driest places on Earth, the sculpture evokes a profound sense of isolation and wonder. As I stood there, gazing at this colossal hand, my mind couldn’t help but wander to the Five-Finger Mountain from the legendary tale of “Journey to the West,” where the Buddha imprisoned the mischievous Monkey King. The comparison added a layer of mystical allure to the already captivating scene.
