Best Sunset Spots in Fukuoka, Kyushu: Breathtaking Views & Hidden Gems Guide
Continuing our Oshima adventure, I embarked on a journey to witness one of nature’s most magical displays. Armed with my trusty JR Pass, I set off in the afternoon from Oshima straight to Fukuma Station, all for a chance to experience the breathtaking “Path of Light” phenomenon that graces this region just twice a year. From the JR station, a short 2 km bus ride transports visitors to this spectacular destination.

⛩ Miyajidake Shrine (宮地嶽神社) stands as a testament to time with its impressive 1,600-year history, but its true claim to fame is the mesmerizing Path of Light – one of Fukuoka’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.

⛩ This sacred site boasts a unique westward orientation, featuring majestic stone steps that cascade down to an 800-meter-long pathway. This illuminated corridor stretches from the town’s entrance all the way to the picturesque Miyaji Beach, creating a celestial bridge between land and sea.

🌇 Nature puts on its grandest show during two magical windows each year – late February and late October. During these periods, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the shrine’s approach, transforming the pathway into a golden river of light. The shrine celebrates this phenomenon with its annual “Sunset Festival,” where visitors can bask in the glow while seated on the ancient stone steps.

☀️ These coveted festival dates are announced well in advance, often requiring either reservations or early arrival for tickets. After checking weather forecasts and wanting to avoid crowds, I strategically planned my visit for the day after the official event. October in Fukuoka still carries summer’s warmth – a fact I learned the hard way as my shorts-clad legs became an all-you-can-eat buffet for local mosquitoes!

🌊 The sunset spectacle exceeded all expectations! At precisely 6 PM, as the sun prepared for its final bow, I sprinted down the radiant Path of Light toward the beach. What awaited me was nothing short of magical – a sunset so profoundly beautiful it brought tears to my eyes, undoubtedly the most stunning I’ve witnessed in my lifetime.

While my tight schedule only allowed a few hours in Fukutsu, this whirlwind experience left an indelible mark. For future visitors, I’d highly recommend allocating more time to fully immerse in this enchanting location at a more leisurely pace. The shrine and its surroundings deserve to be savored, not rushed.
