Discover God’s Emerald: Lake Toba, the World’s Largest Volcanic Lake Adventure
Lake Toba, a stunning volcanic lake nestled in the northern part of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, on the Mada Plateau, boasts the title of the largest freshwater lake in Indonesia and the world’s largest volcanic lake.

To reach this natural wonder, start with a scenic 45-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kualanamu Airport in Medan, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Malacca Strait. Upon landing, hop on an airport bus or hire a car for a more personalized journey. We opted for a seven-seater vehicle with a Chinese-speaking driver, costing RMB600 (365,000 IDR) per day, which comfortably fits four people, making it cost-effective when shared.

Don’t forget to budget for round-trip toll fees of about RMB90 (57,000 IDR) and the round-trip ferry fare, which is approximately RMB220 (135,000 IDR) for both the car and passengers. Ensure there’s ample space in the back row for luggage. The drive to the Parapat dock of Lake Toba takes around 4 hours, where the driver will guide the car and passengers by ferry to the enchanting Samosir Island, also known as Shamoshisi Island, for an unforgettable sightseeing experience.

While in Medan City, be sure to visit the historic Cheong Fatt Tze’s Former Residence, the majestic Maimun Palace, the Grand Mosque, and the picturesque Catholic Church.

Along the way, buses and low-cost hired cars may not stop, but don’t miss the opportunity to see the awe-inspiring Mount Sibayak Volcano 🌋 and the formidable Mount Sinabung Volcano 🌋.
