Discover God’s Emerald: Sumatra’s Lake Toba, A Hidden Paradise
Lake Toba, a breathtaking volcanic lake, is nestled in the highlands of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It stands as not only the largest freshwater lake in Indonesia but also the largest volcanic lake on the planet.

Geography: Shaped like a rhombus, Lake Toba stretches 100 kilometers in length and 30 kilometers in width, covering an expansive area of 1,130 square kilometers. At its heart lies Samosir Island, a 45-kilometer-long and 20-kilometer-wide gem. This island, comparable in size to Singapore, ranks as the fifth-largest island within a lake globally.

Formation: Over 70,000 years ago, a cataclysmic super volcanic eruption reshaped this region, significantly impacting the global population. This powerful event ultimately gave birth to the stunning Lake Toba we see today.

Culture: Samosir Island is a treasure trove of Batak heritage. Traditional longhouses, with their distinctive tall roofs that curve upwards at both ends, reminiscent of buffalo horns, dot the landscape. The island also houses stone-built tombs of the Batak royal family, Sidabutar, and a majestic palace longhouse, constructed over 200 years ago for the King of Simalungun.

This ancient structure, crafted entirely from trees and ropes, stands as a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Batak people.
