Day 1 ✈️Kuala Namu to Lake Toba (Samosir Island)
Embark on a scenic 4.5-hour journey from the airport to Parapat pier, followed by a short 40-minute ferry ride (around Rp15k) to the idyllic Samosir Island. For added convenience, hiring a car from the airport will set you back about Rp700k.
The island boasts well-maintained facilities, and the locals are incredibly welcoming, often speaking a bit of English.

The local cuisine is both hygienic and reasonably priced, with clear menus. On the other side of the island, you can explore the traditional villages where the locals live, offering a glimpse into their rich history. Be prepared for significant temperature changes between day and night, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen in the morning and bundle up at night.

Day 2 Lake Toba to Karo Highlands (Berastagi)
Ferries depart hourly; simply head to the small dock near your hotel and wave down the ferry.
In the Karo Highlands, Nachella Home Stay comes highly recommended. The guesthouse owner speaks fluent English, and the rooftop offers a breathtaking sunset view that is an absolute must-see.

Day 3 Mt Sibayak 🌋
Start your adventure early with a 4:30 am departure to the volcano to catch the sunrise. Your humorous guide will provide a detailed historical introduction and essential safety tips along the way. Don’t miss the chance to gaze at the starry sky🌌 from the summit; it’s a serene and unforgettable experience.

The total cost for this adventure, including a relaxing soak in the hot springs at the foot of the mountain, is approximately Rp200k. To get a taste of local life, hop on a minibus to Sipiso Piso Waterfall. Despite the slightly run-down site, standing under the waterfall has its own unique charm.

Day 4 Karo Highlands back to Airport✈️
Return to the city via a public minibus for Rp25k, then transfer to a bus for Rp40k to reach the airport. For those keen on independent travel, feel free to message me for detailed transportation information.

This trip costs around RM1k per person. Both Samosir Island and the Karo Highlands, recommended by Lonely Planet, offer a tranquil and less crowded atmosphere, perfect for a short getaway. Note that SIM cards are not available at the airport, so it’s wise to arrange for roaming services in advance. And be sure to try the delicious BPK roasted pork; it’s a must-try local delicacy!
