Discover Indonesia’s Little Switzerland: The Ultimate Hiker’s Paradise Escape
Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake, was shaped by a cataclysmic super-eruption over 70,000 years ago, an event so powerful that it drastically reduced the global population. The colossal crater left behind by this eruption now cradles the serene waters of the world’s largest volcanic lake.

How to get there?
[Option 1] Embark on a 45-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur or Penang to Kualanamu Airport in Medan, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Malacca Strait during your journey. Upon arrival, opt for an airport bus or hire a car. We chose a seven-seater with a Chinese-speaking driver for RMB 575 (IDR 375,000) per day, perfect for four people to share the cost.

The back row was reserved for luggage. The scenic drive to the Parapat dock at Lake Toba takes about 4.5 hours. The driver will then guide the car and passengers onto a ferry to reach the enchanting Samosir Island, also known as Shamoshishi Island.
[Option 2] Alternatively, take a leisurely 50-minute ferry ride to Samosir Island, also known as Shamoshishi Island.

Samosir Island, nestled in the heart of the lake, boasts an area comparable to that of Singapore. The picturesque Sidihoni, located on Samosir Island (Pulau Samosir) in the suburbs of Medan, Indonesia, is often referred to as “Little Switzerland.” This charming island is home to traditional longhouses of the Batak people, as seen in pictures ⑧ and ⑨.

These longhouses feature tall, raised roofs that resemble buffalo horns, believed by locals to ward off evil. On the island, you’ll find the tomb of the Batak royal family, the Sidalbatar family, constructed about 250 years ago using stone blocks. Elevated above the ground, the bodies are placed directly within the stones.

In front of the tomb stands a large “sacred tree,” with its roots sprawling across the ground. Wooden planks are laid on the roots, inviting visitors to sit and immerse themselves in the history and stories of the tomb. The last two pictures showcase a majestic statue of Jesus.
