Discover the Super Delicious Three-Color Cake at the Hidden Indonesian Grocery Store in Chinatown
This hidden gem, Medan Kitchen, nestled in Rosemead, is a well-kept secret among the Indonesian community in LA. It’s a treasure trove of fresh and authentic Indonesian lunch boxes, snacks, and small dishes, complemented by a two-room grocery store brimming with an array of snacks. For Indonesians in LA, it’s like having their very own snack haven.

Every visit to this bustling store reveals a lively scene, with shelves quickly emptying of their freshly prepared lunch boxes. Although there’s no dine-in option, patrons happily savor their meals on the outdoor chairs, creating a vibrant and communal atmosphere. The story behind its popularity is truly inspiring.

I first discovered this place through a YouTube recommendation by Eater LA. The heart and soul of Medan Kitchen is Siu Chen, a Chinese-Indonesian grandmother who, at 70 years old, reached the pinnacle of her culinary career by opening this charming little shop. Each lunch box is a labor of love, filled with the comforting flavors of home.

Many of the snacks and pastries here are unique and not found in other Indonesian restaurants. My personal favorite is the Lapis Surabaya, a three-layer cake that’s thick and substantial, made with chocolate, pandan, and butter, and layered with strawberry jam. Every bite is pure delight. Other must-tries include Nasi Padang, curry rice wrapped in leaves, Nasi Kuning Komplit, yellow rice, various fried tofu, salads, and many more Indonesian specialties.

A meal here ranges from $10 to $15, offering both delicious and budget-friendly options.

Beyond the lunch boxes and snacks, the store also stocks a wide variety of Indonesian and Southeast Asian treats. Browsing through the aisles is always a joy. If you’re looking for a change from the usual Chinese and Japanese supermarkets but still crave those rich Asian flavors, Medan Kitchen is the perfect spot. You won’t be disappointed. And if a 70-year-old grandmother can start a new venture, what excuse do I have to slack off? 🤣
