Discover the Truth: Indonesian Volcano Returns, Avoid Online Misleading Strategies Now
We should seize the opportunity to witness the breathtaking sunrise over Bromo volcano while we are still young, climb this active wonder, and listen to the “heartbeat of the earth.” The experience is truly awe-inspiring, just like being on the cover of National Geographic!

1. Your adventure begins around midnight when you set off with a guide. After an hour’s drive to the mid-mountain area, you’ll switch to a jeep. If you have a preference for the color of your jeep—perhaps for that perfect photo—let your guide know in advance. Red and yellow jeeps are particularly photogenic, though the red ones tend to be in high demand.

2. Once in the jeep, you’ll head to the volcano viewing platform to stargaze and await the sunrise. The journey involves navigating winding mountain paths, and the ride can be quite bumpy. The strong smell of gasoline from the jeep might be overwhelming, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, make sure to bring along some medication.

3. You’ll reach the viewing platform around 3:30 AM, where you can rent down jackets and grab some food. Renting a down jacket costs about 20 RMB, and it’s highly recommended if you didn’t bring warm clothes, as temperatures can drop to around 10 degrees Celsius.

4. At around 6:00 AM, start descending towards the crater, arriving by 8:00 AM. The sun can be intense, so apply sunscreen. While a gas mask isn’t necessary, an N95 mask is recommended due to the volcanic ash. You can choose to ride a horse or walk. Our guide charged us 125 RMB per person for the horse ride (others seemed to pay 75 RMB).

My friend and I opted for safety and paid the higher price. If you’re not in top physical condition, riding a horse is advisable, as the round trip is quite long.
[Preparation before departure]
Clothing: It’s best to wear a versatile three-in-one outdoor jacket, which is both thick and warm. Layer a small tank top underneath for easy removal during photos. If you prefer to travel light, you can rent a down jacket on the mountain. For footwear, wear old or disposable shoes, as the volcanic ash can be harsh. Our guide managed fine in flip-flops, but sturdy shoes are generally better.
Protection: Bring an N95 mask, sunglasses or goggles, and a hat. Don’t forget motion sickness medication and a power bank. Pack some snacks for the journey, as there are also vendors on the mountain.
[Important Notes]
1. Start early to avoid getting stuck in traffic on the mountain roads.
2. A Bromo knit cap costs 15 RMB, renting a down jacket is around 20 RMB, and horse riding is approximately 75 RMB.
3. Use the restroom before departure, as public toilets at Bromo require a fee.
4. Even if you don’t usually get carsick, it’s wise to bring motion sickness medication. The mountainous roads and the smell of gasoline from older jeeps can be challenging.
Exercise extreme caution when snapping photos. This is a wild, untamed area, and your safety is entirely in your own hands. (Trust me, I learned this the hard way. When the guide suggested I sit on a tree for a photo, I eagerly climbed up without a second thought. I nearly slipped and fell—it was a heart-stopping moment!)
6. Don’t forget to bring a power bank; once you set off, charging stations will be few and far between.
