I still can’t recall the exact reason for my visit to this place, but I suspect it was lured by its melodious name. Only upon arrival did I realize how lengthy and complex its original name was, and how disconnected the Chinese translation seemed.
Beyond being the heart of power in Java, this place is also home to two colossal temples that were once buried under volcanic ash.

Interestingly, despite Indonesia boasting one of the world’s largest Muslim populations, these ancient sites are dedicated to Hinduism and Buddhism. Unlike other regions where Hinduism openly celebrates nature and fertility, as well as the darker aspects woven into epics, the architecture here exudes a more intricate and understated elegance, a true masterpiece in monochromatic simplicity.

It’s also quite rare to see both Hinduism and Buddhism thriving side by side. During my visit to Borobudur, a staff member shared a thought that resonated deeply with me: Buddhism should not be confined to the label of a religion; it is more accurately described as a way of life.
