Discovering North Four Kings Wayag: A Rare Equatorial Diamond Finally Seen
📍Indonesia, Raja Ampat, Wayag Island
Wayag Island, Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Raja Ampat, crowned the best travel destination by Lonely Planet in 2023, is a treasure trove of natural wonders, and Wayag stands out as a particularly breathtaking gem. Any doubts about the long journey evaporate the moment you reach the mountain’s peak.

Giant karst rock formations dot the landscape, surrounded by emerald green and sapphire blue waters that are even more mesmerizing than Piaynemo. Nearby, a pristine white sandbank lies silently, a testament to nature’s meticulous artistry in this secluded corner of the world.

⛵️Transportation
Nestled in the northern part of Raja Ampat, Wayag is typically accessible only through central and northern liveaboard tours. We opted for a homestay in central Raja Ampat and arranged a chartered boat through our host. The one-way trip takes 3-4 hours, and the sea can be quite turbulent.

For a while, we were the only small boat in the vast ocean, which was both thrilling and nerve-wracking 😥. It’s highly recommended to choose a boat with a powerful motor and ample interior space for a more comfortable journey!

⛰️Hiking
The day trip to Wayag features two highlights: the panoramic viewpoint on the mountain and Shark Beach. The hiking trail is rugged, but using both hands and feet, it remains manageable. The volcanic rocks are sharp, so wearing sneakers is essential. The ascent to the top takes about 30 minutes. With little shade at the summit, make sure to slather on sunscreen and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated ☀️.

💦Challenges Along the Way

We had envisioned a luxurious yacht, but instead, we found ourselves on a small, cramped boat with a dozen other travelers. To add to the discomfort, the boat was delayed, and we set off later, facing rough seas and an uncomfortable ride.

However, the 360-degree panoramic view from the mountain top made every challenge worth it. The surreal beauty left an indelible mark. Later, at Shark Beach, we were surrounded by a dozen small sharks, an experience that still sends shivers of excitement down my spine.
