Lake Toba, a breathtaking volcanic lake, is nestled in the northern part of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, on the Mada Plateau. It holds the distinction of being not only the largest freshwater lake in Indonesia but also the largest volcanic lake in the world.

Travel Guide: Embark on a 45-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kualanamu Airport in Medan, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Strait of Malacca during your journey. Upon arrival, opt for an airport bus or hire a car. We chose a seven-seater vehicle with a Chinese-speaking driver, costing RMB 600 (365,000 IDR) per day, which comfortably accommodates four people, making it cost-effective when shared.

Additionally, budget for round-trip toll fees (approximately RMB 90 or 57,000 IDR) and the round-trip ferry fare (the car needs to board the ferry as well, approximately RMB 220 or 135,000 IDR). Ensure there’s ample space in the back row for luggage. The scenic drive to Parapat pier of Lake Toba takes about 4 hours, where the driver will guide the car and passengers across by ferry to the enchanting Samosir Island, also known as Shamoshisi Island.
