Explore the Best Banyuwangi to Denpasar Ferry Routes and Travel Tips
After an exhilarating visit to Ijen Volcano on the 24th, I quickly made my way back to Banyuwangi train station to pick up my backpack. From there, I summoned a Grab to take me to Banyuwangi port. Since I had used the app to book the ride, the driver conveniently dropped me off at the passenger entrance.

As I stepped out and inquired about where to purchase tickets, he pointed across the road. It’s worth noting that at this point, someone will likely approach you, asking about your boat destination. I responded with Denpasar, and he offered a direct bus service for 150,000 IDR per person, though he didn’t specify the departure time.

Ignoring the offer, I bought a 1:34 PM boat ticket and headed back to the opposite entrance to board the vessel. The journey across the water takes approximately one hour. Be mindful that 1:34 PM is Java time, and after the hour-long boat ride to Bali, you’ll need to adjust your watch, as it will actually be around 3:40 PM.

Upon disembarking, I hurried along the passageway to the exit. Many online reviews have warned of unfriendly locals outside the port who, upon learning you’re heading to the station, might try to sell you overpriced tickets, profiting from the confusion. However, perhaps due to my two-week stay in Indonesia, which had tanned my skin to a local-like hue, I encountered only a few inquiries about private car services, and everything went smoothly until I reached the station.

Spotting the bus to Denpasar, I hopped on, and the driver promptly came over to collect the fare of 60,000 IDR per person. The bus departed at 4:15 PM, and passengers continued to board along the route. I found myself in the front row, a space meant for two but soon filled with four, making the ride uncomfortably crowded.

To add to the chaos, the traffic was horrendous, leaving me questioning the very essence of travel. It wasn’t until 10:00 PM that we finally pulled into Terminal Ubung.

I totally get why you recommend the 8 AM ferry—it felt like the perfect balance of early enough to avoid crowds but not so early it was exhausting. The part about double-checking departure times is crucial too; I almost missed my boat once because I didn’t realize it was running on daylight savings time. Have you tried the food at the Banyuwangi port? I always grab something quick before boarding.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I agree, the 8 AM ferry is a great choice. As for the food at Banyuwangi port, I haven’t personally tried it yet, but I’ve heard great things—definitely worth a quick bite before boarding. Always good to double-check those schedules, especially with time changes!
