📍Over 70,000 years ago, a cataclysmic supervolcanic eruption occurred here, nearly causing the extinction of humanity. The aftermath of this event led to the formation of the stunning Lake Toba we see today. While there are no written records of the eruption’s impact on early humans, some scientists suggest that it had a profound effect on human evolution.

Stanley Ambrose from the University of Illinois posits that the massive eruption spewed out an astonishing 3,000 cubic kilometers of volcanic ash and other materials, decimating most of the early human population. According to his theory, only about 10,000 adults survived, and modern humans are descendants of these resilient survivors.

Although Stanley’s hypothesis remains unproven, the eruption of Lake Toba is recognized as one of the most significant volcanic events in human history.
