A cultural gem that Yogyakarta proudly showcases, Prambanan stands as one of the most renowned historical sites in Central Java. While Borobudur is a testament to Buddhism, Prambanan is a sanctuary for Hinduism, both dating back to the 9th century. This magnificent complex is the largest Hindu temple in Southeast Asia.

Its history mirrors that of Borobudur; it was abandoned in the 10th century due to a volcanic eruption and the capital’s relocation to East Java, and later suffered significant damage from a major earthquake in the 16th century. It wasn’t until 1937 that the Dutch colonizers initiated a systematic restoration effort, with the main tower being fully reconstructed by 1953.

The ongoing restoration of other ruins continues to this day. It seems that even colonizers can contribute positively to culture, proving that not all of them were entirely without merit! Prambanan has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.

Upon entering, the towering spires are immediately awe-inspiring and commanding. The initial impression is reminiscent of Angkor Wat (why do I keep bringing it up? [wink]). Climbing to the top, you can pay homage to the major Hindu deities: Shiva, Ganesha, Durga (Shiva’s consort), Vishnu the protector, Brahma the creator, and their respective mounts: Nandi the bull, Garuda the golden-winged bird, and Hamsa the swan.

We braved the scorching heat, with temperatures feeling like 41 degrees despite the forecast of 31, climbing up and down, nearly succumbing to dehydration and heatstroke 🥵. It’s a true test of endurance and devotion!

It is said that the best times to experience the two jewels of Yogyakarta are:
For Borobudur, catch the first light of dawn and feel the misty shroud over the stupa at sunrise;
For Prambanan, wait for the sunset and witness the majestic silhouette of the spires at dusk.
This time, we decided to mix things up with a ‘Heavenly Palace Uproar’: watching the sunset at Borobudur and enjoying the sunrise at Prambanan, all while Brother Jian’s “Whatever” played on repeat in our ears [wink].

    I’ve always been fascinated by the blend of religions in Indonesia, and Prambanan really highlights that beautifully. It’s incredible to think about how these ancient temples were left behind but have endured for centuries, offering us such a deep glimpse into the past.

It’s amazing how these temples still stand strong, providing a window into the rich history and cultural tapestry of the region. Thank you for your insightful comment—it’s always fascinating to hear others appreciate these incredible sites as much as I do!
