Indonesia Budget Train Travel Guide: Explore Java to Bali on a Shoestring
Travel from Jakarta through Java Island by train, car, and ferry to Bali p1. This guide mainly marks the names of transportation and train stations, choices for purchasing tickets, and geographical locations. p9 Train Traveloka, as some cities have many small train stations which can confuse your choice, I have already marked the station names for ticket purchase on the Traveloak app.
When buying tickets, you need to fill in personal information, and you can collect tickets at the self-service ticket machines at the train station using a QR code or barcode, or you can board the train with a QR code. p10 In Indonesia, use Gojek for taxis.
1. From Jakarta to Yogyakarta: P2, Yogyakarta has Borobudur, Prambanan, and Mount Merapi.

There are many train options, and you can also choose an overnight train that arrives in Yogyakarta at 6 am, saving one night, with a fare of 300k.
2. From Yogyakarta to Surabaya P3:

Surabaya Train Station 🚆 Surabaya Gubeng, choose Surabaya (SGU).
The journey takes 4 hours, with a fare of 230k. You can also go directly from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo p6, a 7-hour journey, with a fare of 300k.
3. From Surabaya to Probolinggo p4, Bromo volcano, or Sewu waterfall, Semeru volcano. Both train and bus are available, but the train is faster, taking 2 hours.

Departures are from 9 am to 12 pm, a 3-hour trip, with many bus schedules. To avoid missing the Bromo volcano, it’s better to leave early (for more detailed bus guides, look for other resources or ask me).
4. From Probolinggo to Banyuwangi, p5, a 4-hour journey. Ijen volcano, then take a ferry to Bali.

This schedule is rare, with only one suitable time slot between 16-20, so you need to book tickets in advance.
If you can’t get a ticket, you can buy a short-distance ticket and ride longer, the fare is 88k, no need to pay extra, just be aware there may not be a seat later. The train schedule and station names are on p7.
5. From Banyuwangi to the Bali ferry terminal bus station p8.

The ferry ticket is very cheap, and after arriving at the Bali port, you can also hire a car to Lovina or take a minibus.
