I’ve been dreaming of exploring these enchanting islands in the Andaman Sea for years! In 2023, my plans were thwarted when tickets sold out, and due to well-known restrictions, the cross-sea border between Thailand and Myanmar was closed to Chinese travelers. But just a week before my intended departure, the hotel informed me that the border had reopened for Chinese visitors.
With renewed excitement, I packed my bag and bought a one-way ticket, ready to embark on this long-awaited adventure!
I meticulously planned a three-day itinerary, booking a combination of accommodations and a tour with a Ranong travel agency. After arriving in Ranong from Phuket, I joined the agency’s island-hopping tour on Day 1, visiting Horse Shoe Island, Emerald Heart Island, and two other stunning spots for snorkeling.
I spent the night in Kawthaung, where the Victoria Cliff Hotel provided a comfortable stay. The travel agency handled all the entry and exit formalities, and my passport was securely kept at the Kawthaung border checkpoint. On Day 2, I set sail to Bird Dance Island aboard the hotel’s boat, staying overnight and enjoying more snorkeling.
On Day 3, I returned to Kawthaung and then back to Ranong. It was an absolutely unforgettable experience! The serene and tranquil atmosphere, with only a few fellow travelers, felt like stepping into a dreamy destination straight out of an adventure novel. Don’t be tempted by the crowded islands around Phuket; the crystal-clear, glowing blue waters here are truly mesmerizing!
The hotel on Bird Dance Island is actually owned by a Chinese person, and some staff can speak Chinese. As the only Chinese guest, they even arranged a private Chinese-speaking guide for my outings.

She can arrange island hopping in Myanmar, Bird Dance Island, and even Thai island tours, often at slightly lower prices than the hotel. Macey went above and beyond, picking me up upon arrival and return, and even taking me to the local weekend market, which wasn’t part of her responsibilities.
Her knowledge of boat schedules and border information is unparalleled, making it the most convenient option to start from Thailand with her. She will handle everything, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey.
2. **Book through Victoria Cliff Hotel**: You can contact them via Instagram, Line, or email, or get in touch with the Chinese-speaking guide.
The hotel offers a similar itinerary to the travel agency, and there’s a diving center on the island where you can book deep diving experiences. While the hotel may not be as familiar with the border crossing details and their responses can be a bit delayed, it’s not a major issue given the unstable border situation.
When departing from Ranong, you’ll need to catch a taxi to the pier, where a hotel staff member will be waiting for you. While this might seem a bit inconvenient, it’s a small price to pay for the adventure that awaits.
Let’s embark on an exciting journey to southern Myanmar! Visit the Zero Kilometer Marker at Victoria Point and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Though it’s unlikely you’ll find an unexplored island here, the experience of disconnecting from the digital world is still refreshing—though Starlink internet is available if you need it.
