Ultimate Guide: Choosing Between Nakuru and Naivasha for Your Kenyan Safari Adventure

When planning my adventure, I found myself torn between the allure of Nakuru and Naivasha. After much deliberation, I ultimately settled on Nakuru. Drawing from my own safari experiences, the insights of our knowledgeable guide, and the feedback from fellow travelers who have explored both destinations, here’s what I discovered:

1. Nakuru is a national park, akin to the renowned Masai Mara and Amboseli, all of which are protected areas teeming with wildlife. In contrast, Naivasha is a serene lake that offers a different kind of natural beauty.

2. During our exhilarating 4-hour safari in Nakuru, we were fortunate enough to spot all of the “Big Four” except for the elusive leopard. Beyond the usual sightings of graceful giraffes, majestic elephants, and vibrant flamingos, we also witnessed a mesmerizing scene of zebras traversing the grasslands, reminiscent of a small-scale migration. This was truly a highlight of our trip.

3. In Nakuru, safety regulations require visitors to remain in their vehicles, ensuring a secure and undisturbed environment for the wildlife. On the other hand, Naivasha allows for more interactive experiences, such as hiking and boat rides, making it a paradise for photography enthusiasts.

4. Both Nakuru and Naivasha boast a selection of luxurious accommodations, though I didn’t personally stay in any of them. Instead, we chose Hillcourt, a charming lodge just a 5-minute drive from the park. The food and lodging were excellent, and the amenities included a refreshing swimming pool, a well-equipped gym, and a rejuvenating spa (Photos 10/11). After two days of bumpy rides in Masai Mara, a soothing spa session was the perfect way to relax and revitalize.

5. Compared to the open savannahs of Masai Mara and Amboseli, Nakuru is characterized by its lush, forested areas and abundant vegetation. The park’s roads wind right up to the lakeside, offering breathtaking views of greenery at every turn. Additionally, Nakuru is known for its safety, allowing visitors to stroll to nearby shops and markets to pick up souvenirs or local crafts.
