The weather has been absolutely glorious lately, with golden sunlight streaming through Kyoto’s crystal-clear skies. The warmth wraps around me like a gentle embrace, making me linger at my doorway, fingers tugging at my trusty wool sweater—should I finally let it retire for the season?

Today’s adventure took me on a ten-kilometer bike ride from home to Yodo Station, lured by whispers of Kawazu cherry blossoms bursting into full splendor. Rather than rushing, I savored each pedal stroke, letting the journey unfold at its own pace. As I approached my destination, the streets came alive—streams of people all converging toward the riverbank like colorful tributaries.

Vibrant pink banners declaring “Yodo no Kawazu-zakura” lined the path, their festive flutter heightening my anticipation until I could practically taste spring in the air.

Then—around one magical bend—the world exploded in pink. Beneath the floral canopy, a delighted crowd moved in hushed reverence, their murmurs blending with the rustle of petals. Sunlight danced through the blossoms, painting dappled patterns on my skin as I joined the procession. When a silver-haired local gazed upward and whispered, “We meet again—spring has come,” her words resonated deep in my chest.

Five springs have woven their way through my life in Japan now. Though I’ve moved between cities and watched countless sakura bloom, that first glimpse each year still feels like running into a childhood friend—familiar yet thrilling, stirring up bittersweet nostalgia that lingers like perfume.

I wandered the riverbank as daylight softened into twilight, until stars began piercing the indigo sky.
