Malacca, a vibrant and colorful destination. Before my visit, I was a bit apprehensive due to some negative feedback, but it turned out to be a hidden gem for those who appreciate a laid-back lifestyle! The city is brimming with unique local cultures, charmingly displayed in the form of brightly painted Western-style houses and beautifully adorned flower carts at Dutch Square.

In Malaysia, the three main ethnic groups are Malays, Chinese, and Indians. Many of the older Chinese residents in Malacca trace their roots back to Fujian and Guangdong, and you can hear Hokkien spoken everywhere. These communities came to Nanyang to escape the war, yet they still maintain strong ties with their homeland, often visiting relatives in China.

When they discovered we were from Fujian, they warmly embraced us, sharing their rich cultural heritage and making us feel a deep, heartfelt connection

The Indian community in Malacca is equally welcoming. At Dutch Square, I met an Indian gentleman who owned a flower cart. Not only did he allow me to take a photo next to his cart, but he also invited me to sit on it and even took a souvenir photo for me. His kindness and hospitality left a lasting impression.

As the evening set in, I strolled around and struck up conversations with some local Malays. Living near a mosque, the call to prayer resonates five times a day, and I felt a profound sense of faith and community.

Life in Malacca is delightfully unhurried. Most shops close after sunset, and the nightlife is minimal, though a few cozy bars and food stalls keep the evening alive. I indulged in several local delicacies: Nyonya cuisine, Nyonya cakes, durian jelly, and durian puffs, each one a delightful treat for the taste buds.

I couldn’t help but express to the local Chinese how much I wished to live here. The picturesque houses, the warm and friendly people, and the light-hearted pace of life make this city truly special. Malacca is a place full of vitality, where every moment feels like a cherished memory.
