Discover Penang’s Historic Clan Jetty: A Cultural Heritage Tour
The Surname Bridges are rows of stilt houses that line the coast at the southern end, built by Chinese laborers who arrived in Nanyang at the close of the 19th century. These homes continue to house Chinese residents on both sides. As you wander through the other several Surname Bridges, you can sense the vibrant history and daily life of the Chinese community in this charming wooden village.

The gentle lapping of seawater against the wooden piles and the soft whistling of the wind evoke the stories of generations who have wandered and strived here. While Chew Jetty is more commercialized and well-maintained, I highly recommend a visit to Tan Jetty! In the evening, come here to bask in the cool sea breeze, sit back, relax with a cigarette and a cold drink, and let your mind drift as you gaze out into the horizon.

⚠️Precautions:
Residences line both sides of the bridge. When exploring, please be mindful and avoid making loud noises 🙅🏻♂️ to respect the residents’ peace, and do not litter; always maintain civility.
