🌳Bako National Park
Even those who aren’t avid hikers can’t resist the allure of Borneo’s tropical rainforest! Armed with 12 ringgit rubber hiking shoes from Mr. DIY, we set out on routes 5 and 6. It felt like we had the entire trail to ourselves that day—no other hikers or footprints in sight, just a maze of gnarled tree roots and deep puddles that made the journey both challenging and exhilarating.

Though it was a bit disappointing that time constraints prevented us from exploring routes 2 and 3, we missed out on seeing the long-nosed monkeys and crocodiles 🐊 I had been eagerly anticipating. However, before departing, we were delighted to catch a glimpse of another type of small monkey [Praise R].

🔘Transport: You have a couple of options for getting to Bako National Park. Taking a bus or grabbing a ride are both viable choices. A taxi from the city center will cost you around 40 RM, and for the return trip, you can hitch a ride with a local, which is also reasonably priced at about 40 RM and can drop you off at a convenient location in the city.

🔘Attire: It’s wise to wear long sports pants, as the trails are lined with tall grasses and potential insect habitats. For footwear, bring a pair of flip-flops and a pair of hiking shoes. When taking the boat to the island, you’ll need to wade through seawater, so flip-flops are perfect for keeping your feet dry.

Once you reach the visitor center, change into your hiking shoes and store your luggage and flip-flops there. The 12 RM rubber shoes from Mr. DIY are highly recommended. They are waterproof, slip-resistant, and ideal for the rugged terrain. Plus, their affordability means you can even discard them in the park’s trash bin after your adventure [Praise R].
