Kota Kinabalu Travel Guide: Must-Know Tips and Attractions for Your Next Trip π
Just got back from the enchanting Kota Kinabalu and I’m bursting with excitement to share my travel adventures with you all! I flew directly from Shanghai to Kota Kinabalu with China Eastern Airlines. After touching down, I withdrew 500 RM from the ATM conveniently located opposite KFC at the airport.

In the early morning, I checked into the luxurious Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel, only to discover that a New Year’s Eve concert was happening right downstairs. The upgrade to a suite was absolutely worth every penny [Flying Kiss R][Flying Kiss R][Flying Kiss R]

πγD1-Kawa Mangrove Adventureγ
Since our flight arrived quite late, we decided to sleep in and set off for the mangroves in the afternoon. I had previously read that there are several captivating mangrove areas in Kota Kinabalu, mainly known for their proboscis monkeys and mesmerizing fireflies. We chose the Kawa route, which is not too far from the city.

A local guide took us, a group of five, on an unforgettable journey, and we were treated to a spectacular display of fireflies [Party R][Party R][Party R]

πγD2-Sapi Island Hoppingγ
After a late return from Kawa the previous night, we opted for Sapi Island for a more relaxed island hopping experience, perfect for leisurely snorkeling. The weather was simply fantastic on the day we went, and the photos turned out to be stunning! We hopped into a taxi to Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal, where numerous small booths offered various packages.

Prices can be negotiated, and since we didn’t add any extra activities like parasailing, the boat ride cost 35 RM, plus 25 RM for the island entry, which is a fixed price [Selfie R][Selfie R][Selfie R]

ποΈγD3-Mengalum Island Outingγ
Buoyed by our wonderful mangrove experience, we booked the same company for the Mengalum Island outing. There were four of us, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and a friendly local staff member throughout the trip. Even if you can’t swim, there’s no need to worry as the guide and the local staff provided very attentive service, ensuring a sense of security!

Don’t forget to take seasickness medication before heading out to sea, as the journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and it’s easy to get seasick when the waves are big, which can dampen your experience. Snorkeling π€Ώ stops at two points: one teeming with colorful fish and the other showcasing vibrant corals πͺΈ.

We also bought a GoPro for filming, and the results were breathtaking [Selfie R][Winking Face R][Thumbs Up R]
After returning from Mengalum Island, we rested and prepared for the New Year’s Eve on December 31st. It coincided perfectly with the first KKDC New Year’s Eve concert organized by the Kota Kinabalu government, which was conveniently located right downstairs from our hotel. The best part? It was free, and there was a dazzling fireworks display π at midnight. We even spotted many celebrities, adding a touch of glamour to a truly memorable New Year’s Eve [Party R]
πΈγD4-University of Sabahγ
On our last day, we opted for a relaxed city walk and visited the picturesque University of Sabah, a hidden gem for photography enthusiasts. We strolled leisurely around the university, capturing the serene beauty and creating lasting memories [Cute R][Cute R][Cute R]
On my way back, I had an unexpected and thrilling encounter with none other than EXO’s charismatic leader, Suho (Kim Junmyeon), in the airport lounge. It was the first time I had ever been so close to a celebrity, and the experience was simply surreal [Winking Face R][Winking Face R][Winking Face R]
