Pulau Perhentian: Discover the Perfect Secluded Holiday Escape Today

For the National Day holiday, I opted for a truly secluded gem in Southeast Asia: Perhentian Island. Watching the news filled with crowded tourist spots, I felt incredibly fortunate to have discovered a place where I could genuinely unwind and savor the tranquility.

Perhentian Island, located in Malaysia, is divided into two parts: Big Perhentian and Small Perhentian. I chose to stay at the Perhentian Island Resort (PIR) on Big Perhentian. While the downside of such an off-the-beaten-path destination is that the facilities are quite basic, the experience of a pristine and untouched island getaway is unparalleled. Simply stepping out of your room, you can spot sharks, turtles, and stingrays right on the beach.

Here are some tips for those planning to visit:

1. For accommodation, if you’re seeking a relaxing vacation, the only recommended hotel on both Big and Small Perhentian is PIR. Although the facilities are modest, the cleanliness is still commendable. The serene environment of Small Perhentian doesn’t quite match up to the tranquility of Big Perhentian, and the beach in front of PIR on Big Perhentian is undoubtedly the most beautiful.

2. When it comes to dining, options on the island are somewhat limited. However, for a more refined experience, Bubu Villa on Small Perhentian offers a delightful afternoon tea or drinks. It’s quite elegant and features a happy hour. In the afternoon, you can lounge on the sunbeds at Coral View, which has a large shaded area, making it perfect for avoiding the harsh sun while enjoying a stunning view.

3. Before your trip, be sure to check the ferry schedules and hotel check-in times. Be prepared for possible delays or cancellations of boats, flights, and cars, and allow ample time for transfers. This will help ensure a smoother journey and minimize any travel stress.

4. On the hotel island, don’t miss the opportunity to sign up for a diving or snorkeling tour. While it may not be as professional as other destinations, it’s very affordable, and they take you to areas that would likely be designated as “marine protected” in other countries. You’ll find yourself swimming among vibrant corals, alongside sharks, turtles, and a myriad of marine life, all within arm’s reach.

5. There are comprehensive travel guides available on Xiaohongshu. Unfortunately, due to limited time, we missed out on some experiences, like hiking. Before your trip, make sure to do thorough research and plan your itinerary to fully appreciate the breathtaking scenery and activities this island has to offer.
